About the Class

Wheel Thrown Pottery - 4 week series

In this private (or semi-private) lesson series, the student has 4 weeks to learn the basics of throwing pottery on the wheel. We'll cover the basics of centering the clay, opening and pulling a wall. Since there's no one "right way" to work on the wheel, Alyson has a very analytical approach to teaching. This helps students understand why they do what they do, not just how to do it.

After the series is over, students are encouraged to pursue further practice on the wheel and explore variations on hand positions to find the most comfortable and effective one for that individual.

This class is not designed to produce pots, its designed to produce potters. Since "failure" is just as good a teacher as "success," come prepared to let go of perfection and just practice. The perfection will come later.

Students that have completed the 4-week series can opt into Alyson's Open Studio time offered 3 days a week (Sunday 1-4, Tues 6-9 and Thursday 1-4). This is time for students to come practice their wheel work (or handbuilding!) with an instructor on hand for advice. The price for Open Studio classes are $30/ session or unlimited for $100/calendar month.

6 lbs of clay is provided, and more clay is available for purchase.

Private lessons are individual or in a group of 2.
